Kirrak House team celebrates after blitzing accreditation

Bass Coast Health (BCH) is celebrating after the beloved aged care facility at Wonthaggi, Kirrak House, was re-accredited following a comprehensive external accreditation process.

Kirrak House passed its three yearly accreditation review by a team from the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission with a glowing report, meeting all the standards required.

BCH CEO Jan Child was extremely proud to receive the review.

“The process for accreditation is thorough and for our staff to receive such positive feedback is a testament to their extraordinary commitment,” she said.

“This achievement reflects the passion and dedication of the staff, for whom caring for our residents means far more than just a job. They go above and beyond to ensure our residents feel valued, appreciated and safe, as our staff know they have a privileged role of supporting our residents in their home.”

The accreditation team completed their audit over three days, talking with residents, family and staff, and checking documentation and observing staff interaction with residents.

The assessors found the home met all of the requirements set out in the Aged Care Quality and Safety Standards and were impressed by the resident-centred care and service delivered at Kirrak House, particularly:

• Staff provide personalised and respectful care

• Staff have good knowledge and can explain the needs and preferences of each resident

• All residents and representatives were extremely complimentary of the care and service they receive

• The kitchen had great processes in place to ensure resident safety and satisfaction

• The environment inside and outside of Kirrak House was beautifully maintained.

The assessment team was impressed by how well staff knew residents and their needs, and the high level of care provided. Residents and their representatives told the assessors of the personalised care they received.

This exciting news about accreditation follows the refurbishment of the interior of Kirrak House, with new painting and flooring throughout, and the installation of a new nurse call system. A new edible garden is being installed and fruit trees planted to make Kirrak House feel even more like home.

Kirrak House is a 30-bed facility unit located next to Wonthaggi Hospital.

BCH’s other aged care facility, Griffiths Point Lodge, has 29 beds at San Remo, and overlooks the sea and Cape Woolamai.

“Our aged care facilities are staffed by a team of professional skilled staff, dedicated to the care of each individual care recipient. The teams are led by passionate Nurse Unit Managers and include nursing staff, diversional therapists, cleaning and catering staff,” Ms Child said.

“Aged care staff are specialists! Not only are they expert in delivering the best of care, they have an amazing commitment to respond to the uniqueness of each resident and their family, and to ensure the residents’ self-esteem, dignity and freedom of choice are valued.

“Our Aged Care teams have endured all the challenges of the Pandemic, but their above and beyond commitment has ensured our residents are safe and well cared for. My thanks to everyone at BCH for their extraordinary efforts in supporting our Aged Care services.“
