Community urged to support fundraiser for neo natal unit at Wonthaggi Hospital

Everyone’s invited to buy tickets for an amazing, fun filled, music filled fundraiser, while supporting growth of services for our local families.

Three local businesses – Headlines Hairdressing, The Cape Tavern, and Revive Beauty and Spa – are holding a fundraiser to fit out a Neo Natal Care unit at Wonthaggi Hospital.

The businesses aim to raise a total of $20,000, with each venue offering a different major prize.

Headlines Hairdressing is offering $1200 worth of hair products and tickets are still available. Revive Beauty & Spa has offered 12 months of massages. The Cape Tavern’s prize is two nights’ accommodation at Mount Avoca Winery with all the ‘trimmings’ for a great stay. To buy your ticket, visit The Cape Tavern, Surf Beach Road, Cape Paterson or Headlines Hairdressing at Shop 2 156-158 Graham Street, Wonthaggi – or you can buy on the day!

The raffle will be drawn at The Cape Tavern at 5pm on Sunday 11 September, however from 3pm there will be live music and a further raffle with a range of prizes on the day.

The Neo Natal Care unit will enable babies to receive specialised care at Wonthaggi Hospital and reduce the need for families to travel to Melbourne for care.

The unit will entail a two-bed special care nursery that will be expanded to a Level 3 Nursery, and the Maternity Unit will be upgraded to Level 4, enabling more complex care to be delivered at the hospital.

“This would mean that we could keep mothers and babies together rather than having to transfer them out,” BCH CEO Jan Child said.

“The service would support babies that need a bit more respiratory support, IV antibiotics or feeding. It would also mean that we can keep smaller babies and late premature babies all the way down to 34 weeks.

“We are so grateful that these three amazing local businesses are supporting our health service once again. Their contribution in the past helped us build a Cancer service and this will be instrumental in building a neo natal service. BCH is extremely committed to growing services safely, but we rely on community support such as that provided by Headlines Hairdressing, The Cape Tavern, and Revive Beauty and Spa, to build and fit out new services locally.”

According to Ms Child, “I know people often feel sentimental about supporting campaigns by city hospitals such as Royal Children’s. They provide a fantastic service. But they have the whole of Victoria to support them. We only have our local community and so our plea is, if you want to give, give locally so that we can grow services locally. We can only do more, with our community’s support and we welcome any help to help us build bigger and better services.”
