Art show helps BCH to care for children

The children of parents with mental illness and other life challenges will benefit from a donation from The KernArt Prize art show held at Kernot.

The show committee donated $5000 raised at the 2021 show to Bass Coast Health (BCH) to enable children from disadvantaged families to access school camps, music lessons, sporting activities and more.

BCH will distribute the funds to families who access such BCH services as counselling and social work.

KernArt Prize President Adam McLeod said, “We want to ensure the children of parents with mental illness do not miss out on school excursions and camps, and the many fun community activities other children may be able to access readily.”

Sally Phillips, BCH’s Senior Program Manager of Community Services and Allied Health, said the donation would benefit the community.

“The last couple of years have been tough and we have seen huge demand for our counselling services because people are struggling,” she said.

“Children often get swept up in the stress of these situations so we are trying to support them whenever we can and this donation will certainly help to brighten the lives of these children.”

The last KernArt Prize was held in April 2021 as an online event due to the COVID Pandemic and associated lockdowns and restrictions. This year, the show will return to a physical event on the Melbourne Cup weekend.

The Kernot Community Hall will host the art show from Friday 28 October to Sunday 30 October, with the official opening at 7pm on the Friday.
