The incredible residents at Bass Coast Health’s residential aged care facility, Griffiths Point Lodge, are once again stepping out of their comfort zones to take part in the United Nations’ ‘Safe. Everywhere. Always.‘ Walk.
The event raises money and awareness for the rights of women and girls to be free from violence and discrimination.
The Griffiths Point Lodge (GPL) team, ‘The Vintage Crusaders’, will walk, shuffle and roll a minimum of 10km over the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which starts on Monday 25 November and ends on Tuesday 10 December.
GPL Diversional Therapist Tash Stapleton said last year, the GPL residents were so determined to end violence against women and girls around the world, that they more than doubled their fundraising target of $500.
“That’s why this year, they have increased their target to $1,000 and are hoping to double that also,” she said.
Weather permitting, The Vintage Crusaders plan to walk down the main street of San Remo on Monday 25 November at 11.30am, from the IGA supermarket to the San Remo Fisherman’s Co-operative. There, they will enjoy a well-earned rest and lunch before returning to IGA to board the bus for GPL.
“Whilst this doesn’t seem a great distance, it is a difficult walk for many of our residents. They will need support and they will be tired, but their dedication and determination will get them there. We hope you can come and cheer us on or even walk with us if you please,” Tash said.
Supporters are encouraged to wear a splash of orange.
