Former aged care resident leaves a legacy to Bass Coast Health

News

A bequest to Bass Coast Health (BCH) has enabled the purchase of a mini bus that is benefiting aged care residents and community members.

BCH operates Kirrak House, a residential aged care facility at Wonthaggi Hospital, and is grateful to receive funds from the family estate of a late resident, Ronald Lawless, for an eight-seat bus.

The vehicle is used by Kirrak residents and members of BCH’s Social Support Group to enjoy outings and be involved in the community to improve their wellbeing.

“We take heart in knowing that Mr Lawless was satisfied with the level of his care to the point he wished to nominate BCH as a beneficiary of his estate,” BCH CEO Jan Child said.

“His kind gift has ensured our residents and Social Support Group members can enjoy great freedom and social interaction in their lives because they have this bus accessible to them.”

Ms Child said the public health service sincerely appreciates donations and bequests that enable the purchase of equipment and furniture.

“This includes medical equipment that enhances our service to the community, as well as furniture that gives our consumers a greater level of comfort while they’re receiving care,” she said.

“Being a sub-regional health service dedicated to their care of our local community, we’re able to offer donors the opportunity to have a say in where their money goes. So if a donor gives towards a particular piece of equipment, they can come to our health service and see where and how that equipment is being used.

“BCH is able to provide the services it does locally because of the extraordinary community support provided by local community members.”

BCH’s Social Support Group brings isolated people together for activities, outings and social events. Being socially connected is known to improve health and wellbeing outcomes, both mental and physical. People with strong social connection are more likely to live longer, healthier lives.

The group is supported by BCH staff and transport is available. It’s available to people under the care of My Aged Care, on My Aged Care Home Care Packages and NDIS Clients.
